In this digital age, search engine optimization (SEO) is a vital tool for businesses to get seen online and reach their audience.
For Managed Service Providers (MSPs) looking to stand out in a crowded market, SEO is key. MSP search engine optimization is a dynamic aspect of MSP marketing that evolves over time, making it crucial to stay current with trends and strategies in 2024.
What truly differentiates MSPs from others is the quality of their people to service accounts well and their ability to upgrade their service and people to adapt to the rapidly changing IT and Cybersecurity environment.
The number one factor limiting an MSP’s ability to attract, hire, train, and retain top talent is growth.
I created this guide to help MSPs navigate the world of SEO, from understanding why it’s important, to implementing strategies that drive traffic, build authority and ultimately, grow business.
Whether you’re new to SEO or looking to refine your existing strategies, this guide will give you the knowledge and tools to get your online presence optimized and attract more clients.
What is SEO and why is it important for Managed Service Providers
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing your website and online presence to improve its visibility and ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs). The visibility of your website on the search engine results page is influenced by both on-site and off-site SEO strategies, which impact your search rankings. As a Managed Service Provider (MSP), understanding SEO and why it matters is key to getting your online presence established, attracting potential clients and staying ahead of the competition.
SEO for Managed Service Providers
Your current and potential customers are using search engines like Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and increasingly, social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok, and YouTube, to find the products and services they need.
The question isn't if they're searching. The question is, are you showing up?
And are you showing up in a relevant way, that's helpful for these platforms as well as your customers.
That is search engine optimization in a nutshell.
By implementing some of the SEO strategies that I'll share in this article, you can ensure your MSP website appears at the top of the search results for relevant keywords, increasing the chances of attracting qualified leads and converting them into customers.
Benefits of SEO for Managed Service Providers
- Increased Visibility: SEO gets your MSP website to the top of the search engine results pages, making it more visible to clients searching for managed services. This increased visibility means more organic traffic and a higher chance of leads.
- Targeted Traffic: SEO allows you to optimize your website for specific keywords and phrases your target audience is using in their search queries. By targeting the right keywords you can get targeted traffic that’s more likely to convert into customers.
- Credibility and Trust: When your website is consistently at the top of the search results, potential clients trust you more. They see your MSP as a reputable and reliable provider, leading to higher trust and conversion rates.
- Cost-Effective Marketing: Compared to traditional advertising, SEO is a cost-effective way to market your MSP. Instead of paying per click or impression, SEO is about organic search results, so you can drive traffic to your website without breaking the bank.
- Long-Term Results: While SEO requires ongoing effort and optimization, the results are long lasting. Especially if you're creating evergreen content which produces value today and tomorrow, versus simply topical content. By consistently implementing SEO strategies you can get your online presence established and generate organic traffic and leads over time.
SEO is a Journey
SEO is not a one-off task but an ongoing process. Search engines are constantly updating their algorithms to deliver the best content to users. As an MSP, it’s essential to stay up to date with the latest SEO trends and best practices to maintain and improve your search rankings.
Do you have an up-to-date My Google Business Profile?
Are you closely monitoring your website traffic to see drop-offs or spikes for particular web pages or a particular keyword?
Do you have a simple dashboard for your monthly search volume?
Are you building free tools that are relevant for your customers based on current events?
For example, did your MSP build any relevant content or free downloads surrounding the CrowdStrike-Microsoft outing in July of 2024?
In the following sections we’ll be looking at the different aspects of SEO for Managed Service Providers, including keyword research, website optimization, content creation and tracking success. By understanding these key elements and implementing them you can use SEO to grow your MSP.
How to Research and Find Relevant Keywords for Your Managed Services
Keyword research is a fundamental part of any SEO strategy. By knowing the keywords and phrases your target audience is using to search for managed services you can optimize your website and content to rank higher in search engine results. In this section we’ll explain why keyword research is important for SEO, introduce you to keyword research tools and show you how to choose the right keywords for your managed services.
Why Keyword Research is Important
- User Intent: Keyword research helps you understand the intent behind user search queries. By knowing the keywords and phrases your target audience is using you can align your content with their needs and increase the chances of appearing in search results.
- Competitor Analysis: Through keyword research you can see what keywords your competitors are ranking for. This will help you identify gaps in the market and find opportunities to optimize your website and content for keywords your competitors may have missed.
- Targeted Audience: By doing thorough keyword research you can ensure your website is visible to the right audience - those actively searching for the managed services you offer. This targeted approach will lead to higher conversion rates and a more focused marketing strategy.
Keyword Research Tools
- Google Keyword Planner: A free tool by Google where you can research keywords related to your managed services, see search volume, competition and potential bid prices for paid advertising.
- SEMrush: A popular keyword research tool that provides data on keyword search volume, competition and related keywords. It also shows your competitors’ keyword strategy so you can refine your own.
- Ahrefs: Ahrefs is known for its keyword research features. It provides search volume, keyword difficulty and traffic potential. It also has competitor analysis, content gap analysis and other SEO insights.
- Moz Keyword Explorer: Moz’s Keyword Explorer provides keyword suggestions, search volume data and difficulty scores. It also shows organic click through rate (CTR) for specific keywords so you can prioritise high impact keywords.
- Keysearch.co: Keysearch is a much cheaper alternative to all of the other tools mentioned above. I’ve tried Ahrefs, SEMrush, Low Fruits, Keyword Explorer, Ubersuggest, and many more since, but nothing has been as intuitive and as user-friendly as Keysearch. You can easily check keyword difficulty, and see which competitors are ranking for those terms in the top 10. It's also very easy to see what theiir Domain Ranking and Authority is, to see if there are low domain authority sites that are able to rank in the top 10 for a particular keyword.
How to Choose the Right Keywords
- Relevance: Choose keywords that are relevant to your managed services and align with your target audience’s needs and search intent. Make sure the keywords match what you offer and the content on your website.
- Search Volume: Consider the search volume of the keywords to see how much traffic they can drive to your website. Focus on keywords with high search volume to increase your visibility.
- Competition: Look at the competition for each keyword. Highly competitive keywords can be hard to rank for especially if you’re just starting out. Consider targeting a mix of high competition and low competition keywords to increase your chances of ranking.
- Long-tail Keywords: Long-tail keywords are more specific phrases that have lower search volume but higher conversion potential. Including long-tail keywords in your strategy will help you attract targeted traffic and capture customers further along in their buying journey.
In the next section we’ll look at how to optimize your Managed Service Provider website for SEO where your chosen keywords will come into play.
Optimizing Your Managed Service Provider Website for SEO
On-site SEO is crucial for enhancing a website's visibility and user experience by focusing on specific optimization practices conducted directly on a company's website. Optimizing your Managed Service Provider (MSP) website for SEO is key to increasing its visibility and getting it to show up in search results. In this section we will look at website structure and user experience and on-page and off-page SEO techniques to help you optimize your website for better rankings.
Website Structure and User Experience

A solid site architecture improves user experience and helps search engines understand the relevance and relationships between pages.

- Image Optimization: Optimize your images by compressing them for web, using descriptive file names and adding alt tags. This improves page load speed and helps search engines understand the context of your images.
Off-page SEO Techniques
- Link Building: Get high-quality backlinks from authoritative websites to increase your website’s authority and credibility. Focus on building natural, relevant and diverse links through guest blogging, influencer outreach and creating content that others want to link to.
- Social Media Engagement: Engage with your audience on social media to drive traffic and increase brand visibility. Encourage social sharing of your content to expand your reach and potentially get backlinks.
- Online Directories and Listings: Make sure your MSP is listed in relevant online directories such as local business directories and industry-specific listings. This increases your online visibility and provides more opportunities for backlinks.

- Multimedia Content: Diversify your content by incorporating multimedia elements such as videos, infographics and images. These types of content enhance user experience, increase engagement and make your content more shareable.
- User-Generated Content: Encourage your audience to contribute to your content by allowing comments, reviews or testimonials. User-generated content adds value to your website and builds community engagement and trust with potential clients.
Promote Your Content
- Social Media Marketing: Promote and share your content on social media with your audience. Engage with your followers, join relevant industry groups and use social media advertising to increase your reach and drive traffic to your website.
- Email Marketing: Build an email list and share your content with subscribers. Email marketing allows you to nurture your audience and drive traffic to your website through targeted campaigns.
- Influencer Outreach: Identify influencers or organizations in your industry and collaborate with them to promote your content. This can be through guest blogging, co-creating content or seeking endorsements from industry experts.
- Content Distribution Platforms: Share your content on platforms like Medium, LinkedIn Pulse or industry-specific forums. This gets you in front of a wider audience and drives traffic to your website.
